DISEASES caused by plague-infested fleas dropped on China by Japan during the Second World War remained virulent long after the war ended, expert witnesses told a Tokyo court last week. Chinese doctors described for the first time how the effects of the biological weapon attacks continued for years after the Japanese Imperial Army spread infected fleas in the city of Ningbo, Zhejiang province, in October 1940. Is the US wimpish over biological weapons. Would the world understand a more aggressive stance. Ken Alibek thinks so. He has a unique perspective. In 1992, he blew the whistle on the Soviet Union's Biopreparat biowarfare machine. The programme was one of the great deceptions of the cold war because the Soviet Union had signed a treaty banning such work. Continue reading…

Fears that terrorists may have planned to use crop-dusting aeroplanes to spray US cities with biological warfare agents need to be taken seriously, according to British experts. While such an attack would face technical difficulties, it could be extremely effective, they say. "If you wanted to use biological weapons, one of the best ways is to use a crop duster," says Malcolm Dando, professor of international security at the University of Bradford. Continue reading…

Bubonic plague, the bacterium blamed for the Black Death of medieval Europe and now a potential biological weapon, has had its entire genome sequenced. The genes seem to be "unusually fluid", readily re-arranging themselves and picking up new genes from other microbes. That could mean that more virulent strains of plague might emerge. Continue reading…

THE fear of infectious disease has largely faded in the wealthy West over the past century, thanks to sanitation, antibiotics and the like. But it re-emerged with a vengeance this year when some humans switched allegiance and began working on the side of the killers. Weapons-grade anthrax sent through the mail in the US has killed five people so far. Continue reading…

THE virus that causes camelpox is an even closer relative of the smallpox virus than scientists believed. This heightens fears about its potential risks, particularly because some experts fear that Iraq may be using it in its biological weapons programme. "It was surprising how close these two viruses were," says Geoffrey Smith of Imperial College in London, who has sequenced a strain of camelpox virus isolated from camels in Iran in 1970. Continue reading…

An alleged plot to release poisonous gas on London's underground rail network has raised widespread concern over the possibility of such a terrorist attack. On Monday, the UK government's Chief Medical Officer announced a poster campaign to tell passengers what to do in the event of a gas attack. On Sunday it was revealed that three men had been charged under the UK's Terrorism 2000 Act following raids on houses in north London on 9 November. Continue reading…

British police are searching for a batch of ricin, the highly poisonous plant toxin, following the discovery of traces in a London flat. They are also seeking three men, in addition to the six Algerians already being questioned. Anti-Terrorist Branch police officers raided a one-bedroom apartment on Sunday morning, after receiving a tip-off, reportedly from the French intelligence service. Continue reading…

A new dipstick test for bubonic and pneumonic plague will help dramatically reduce the number of cases in countries still blighted by the diseases. Bubonic plague is highly contagious and spreads rapidly into epidemics. It is almost eradicated in the developed world, but there at least 4000 confirmed cases every year in more than 20 countries, mainly in Africa. Continue reading…
