news.com.au is carrying a pleasant human interest article on cryonicists in Australia who make use of US cryopreservation services (such as Alcor or the Cryonics Institute). The sixth Australian to be cryopreserved was apparently frozen earlier this month. By associating individual names, faces and messages with the cryonics industry, we are better able to communicate with legislators. BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) - Winters in Maine are cold, but the chill outside the Jackson Laboratory is nothing compared to the temperature inside the lab's tanks of liquid nitrogen. Eight round tanks cooled to 320 degrees below zero squat in a windowless basement room. Researchers are filling the tanks with mouse embryos, at a rate of 2,000 embryos a day. Continue reading…

The Cryonics Institute has reached an agreement with the Michigan Department Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) Bureau of Commercial Services to be licensed as a cemetery. As the Sun Sentinel reports, Suspended Animation, Inc. didn't fare well during a review from the Boca Raton's Planning and Zoning Board. Despite the outpouring of support, the board recommended rejecting the application to build a cryonics research laboratory. This will go on to the City Council early next year for a final vote. The Boca Raton News reports that the permit hearing for Suspended Animation, Inc. will be held this Thursday. As you might recall, this is a new research cryonics company intending to operate in Florida. Suspended Animation (funded by the Life Extension Foundation, who have been putting more money into cryonics of late) will be looking at ways to improve cryonic suspension technologies, freezing the body indefinitely without damaging tissue.
