Comparison of hormonal activity (estrogen, androgen and progestin) of standardized plant extracts for large scale use in hormone replacement therapy.Extracts from red clover (Trifolium pratense), soybean (Glycine max.) and black cohosh (Cimicifuga racemosa) are frequently used as alternative compounds for hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat menopausal disorders. Identification of residues outside the two binding sites that are critical for activation of the lactogenic activity of human growth hormone.Human growth hormone (hGH) binds lactogenic or somatotrophic receptors, creating active heterotrimeric complexs. Comparison of hGH structures either free or bound to a single lactogenic or somatotrophic receptor shows binding is associated with structural changes. Continue reading…

Identification of a DAF-16 Transcriptional Target Gene, scl-1, that Regulates Longevity and Stress Resistance in Caenorhabditis elegans. In Caenorhabditis elegans, an insulin-like signaling pathway, which includes the daf-2 and age-1 genes, controls longevity and stress resistance. Downregulation of this pathway activates the forkhead transcription factor DAF-16, whose transcriptional targets are suggested to play an essential role in controlling the phenotypes governed by this pathway. The endocrine regulation of aging by insulin-like signals. Reduced signaling of insulin-like peptides increases the life-span of nematodes, flies, and rodents. In the nematode and the fly, secondary hormones downstream of insulin-like signaling appear to regulate aging. In mammals, the order in which the hormones act is unresolved because insulin, insulin-like growth factor-1, growth hormone, and thyroid hormones are interdependent. Continue reading…

Effect of GH and IGF-I treatment on reproduction, growth, and plasma hormone concentrations in domestic nutria (Myocastor coypus). The role of GH and IGF-I in the control of reproduction, growth, and hormone secretion in domestic nutria was examined. In the first series of experiments, we studied the effects of single and multiple (daily for 20 days) injections of recombinant hGH (15&mgr;g/animal) on plasma triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), and progesterone (P) concentrations, as well as on the duration of pregnancy (time between start of mating and birth of pups), number of pups born, and body weight of adult females and their newborn pups. Unequal Impact Of Short-Term Testosterone Repletion On The Somatotropic Axis Of Young And Older MenABSTRACT The present clinical study compares the impact of low- and high-dose parenteral testosterone (T) supplementation on daily GH secretory patterns and serum IGF-I, IGFBP-1, and IGFBP-3 concentrations in healthy older (60-82 yr) and young (20-40 yr) men. Body Composition And Quality Of Life In Adults With Growth Hormone Deficiency; Effects Of Low-Dose Growth Hormone Replacement ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: Adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD) is characterized by abnormalities in body composition and a poor preceived quality of life (QoL). Weight-based high-does growth hormone replacement (GHR) results in improvements in body composition and QoL in AGHD. Continue reading…

Two Years Of Replacement Therapy In Adults With Growth Hormone Deficiency OBJECTIVES: Although several studies have shown beneficial short-term effects of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) therapy in adult GH deficient (GHD) patients, few data are available on large groups of patients treated for more than one year. Continue reading…

Calorigenic Effects on Growth Hormone: The Role of Thyroid Hormones GH administration increases energy expenditure, independent of changes in lean body mass, in healthy, obese, and GH-deficient subjects. This may be casually link to the well known GH-induced increase in peripheral T4 to T3 generation, but experimental data are sparse. Continue reading…

Acromegaly and Cancer: Not a Problem. Acromegaly is usually caused by a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma. Somatic growth and metabolic dysfunction occur subsequent to unrestrained GH secretion and elevated insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-3 levels (1) (Fig 1). Classic clinical features of acromegaly include acral overgrowth, sweating, headaches, menstrual disturbances, and glucose intolerance (Table 1) (2). Continue reading…

VIDEO: Brain Age Workshop
Dr. Eric Braverman, Director of The Place for Achieving Total Health (PATH Medical), Chairs the Brain Age Workshop taking place Dec. 9, 2009. Held in conjunction with the Winter Session of the 17th Annual World Congress on Anti-Aging Medicine & Regenerative Biomedical Technologies. The Brain Age Workshop features presentations on Brain Mind Assessment via Neuropsychological Analysis, Movement Deficiency Syndrome, Hormones and the Brain, Nootropic Drug Mechanisms, and Traumatic Brain Injury. View this video to learn about Dr. Braverman’s brain-based model of aging and age modulation.
