Most drugs of abuse decrease the generation of new neurons in the brain, but the effects of marijuana on this process, called neurogenesis, had not been clear. In a JCI paper researchers show that a potent and synthetic cannabinoid promotes neurogenesis. This drug also exerts anti-anxiety and antidepressant-like effects. Cannabinoids are perhaps the only illicit drug that can enhance adult neurogenesis and subsequently modify behavior. Continue reading…

Without directly invalidating State marijuana laws that allow for medical use, the US Supreme Court has decided that "federal law trumps state law" and that therefore, federal prosecutions of individuals using marijuana cannot be countered by reference to state laws allowing its use, be that medical or otherwise. According to this article, the court said the regulation of illicit drugs is a matter of interstate commerce, reserved exclusively to the federal government by the Constitution. Continue reading…

A first-of-its-kind study of safety issues surrounding the medical use of cannabis has just been launched. Known as the COMPASS study (Cannabis for the management of pain: assessment of safety study), the research initiative will follow 1400 chronic pain patients, 350 of whom use cannabis as part of their pain management strategy, for a one-year period. HUGO - Police seized 1,200 marijuana plants found growing in a large underground operation outfitted with electrical power, climate control, watering devices and fertilizing systems. Santa Cruz, Calif., police pulled over a car with tinted windows — a no-no in California — last September, reports the Santa Cruz Sentinel. Inside they found two men and 18 ounces of "Purple Haze" brand marijuana worth about $3,000. Leo Beus, 47, and his friend, Jon Balesteri, 54, were charged with transporting marijuana with intent to sell, but after they said they'd bought the weed at the Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Club — and produced medical prescriptions to prove it — the charges were eventually dropped. When it comes to legitimate use of medical marijuana, the San Diego Police Department won't be cooperating with the feds, according to a Jan. 28 memo from police chief William Lansdowne. In the memo, sent to Mayor Dick Murphy and the San Diego City Council, Lansdowne says his officers, if asked, will not participate in any federal investigation or drug bust where qualified medical marijuana patients and caregivers are the target. THURSDAY, Aug. 28 (HealthDayNews) -- A synthetic version of the active ingredient in marijuana may reduce agitation and promote weight gain in people with Alzheimer's disease. A recent study of 48 people with Alzheimer's found 66 percent of them experienced significant improvement in agitation and 33 percent of them had functional improvement after a month of treatment with dronabinol.
