A large proportion of genetically caused deafness in humans may be reversible by compensating for a missing protein, based on discoveries in mice. Emory University researchers have found that in mice, increasing the amount of the protein connexin26 in the ear's cochlea compensates for an absence of another protein, connexin30. Researchers investigating the link between zinc supplementation and reduced athlerosclerosis in rabbit models have used a different method to lend support to their hypothesis that the effect may be due to a reduction in iron-catalyzed free radical reactions. Researchers from the National University of Singapore reported in the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine last year that supplementation of a high cholesterol diet with zinc reduced the formation of lesions in the arteries of rabbits, but said that the effects were not linked to changes in cholesterol levels. ... Anti-MRSA silver pyjamas trialled

Pyjamas and bed linen made with silver cloth are being trialled in a hospital to help combat the MRSA superbug. Experts at Barts and The London NHS Trust hope to prove that silver can be used to clear MRSA on the skin and thus protect vulnerable patients. The specially created fabrics will be used at the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, Herts, over the next year.
