4 cups of coffee daily may exert a protective effect against endometrial cancer.

A number of previous studies suggest that coffee – abundant in antioxidant compounds, may exert health protective effects. Melissa Merritt, from Imperial College London (United Kingdom), and colleagues analuzed data collected on over 456,000 women, enrolled in either the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC) or Nurses’ Health Studies (NHS/NHSII). The team assessed the dietary habits of those women who were subsequently diagnosed with cancer of the endometrium – the lining of the uterus (1303 women  in EPIC and 1531 women in NHS/NHSII).  Data analysis revealed that those women who drank 4 cups of coffee daily were at 18% lower risk of endometrial cancer, as compared to subjects who drank less than 1 cup a day.  The study authors submit that: “Our findings suggest that coffee intake may be inversely associated with endometrial cancer risk.”
