Cosmetic Surgery Soars in Popularity

The 1990's saw more Americans than ever undergoing cosmetic surgery. Liposuction was the most popular procedure in the year 2000, with 670,000 people going under the surgeon's knife compared to just 72,000 in 1990. Next on the list was eyelid surgery, with nearly half a million procedures being carried out in 2000. Quite surprisingly, after all the health scares, breast augmentation is still one of the most popular operations. In 2000, more than 288,000 breast augmentations were carried out, up from approximately 42,000 in 1990. However, the so-called "lunch-time" procedures such as wrinkle-fighting Botox injections and chemical peels are the fastest growing in popularity, with more than 2.5-million being carried out in the year 2000.
