Daily supplementation of eggshell membrane may help to reduce pain and discomfort of osteoarthritis affecting the knee and hip.

Abundant in protein and glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, and collagen – compounds associated with joint health, eggshell membrane is emerging as a contender to alleviate symptoms of osteoarthritis.  German researchers enrolled 44 men and women with osteoarthritis affecting the knee and/or hip, ages 32 to 95 years, in a study in which each received daily supplementation of eggshell membrane (500 mg) for 8 weeks, and reported changes in pain and discomfort of their osteoarthritis.  After supplementing with eggshell membrane for 30- and 60-days, subjects averaged 35.6% improvement in 9 of 10 daily activities.  The study authors observe that: “Supplementation … significantly reduced pain, both rapidly (10 days) and continuously (60 days) demonstrating that it is a safe and effective therapeutic option for the treatment of pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee and/or hip.”
