The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project reports that in the United States, hospital stays due to coronary artery disease fell 31%, from 1.4 million in 2007 to 964,000 in 2007. For the same ten-year period, hospital stays for stroke fell also, by 14%, to stand at 527,000 – dropping it to become the 15th leading cause of hospitalizations. However, congestive heart failure hospitalizations rose 3% during the same decade, to stand at 1.025 million. Overall, in-patient hospital stays rose 14% between 1997 and 2007, from 34.68 million to 39.54 million, respectively.
