Due to the fact that older people are generally healthier, they expect more out of life and are being "much more" sexually active, a sector commentator has suggested.
Mary Clegg, co-founder of the British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy (BASRT), states that in times gone by people used to think that they would no longer be sexually active once they reached 40 or 50.
"I don't think that is correct nowadays," she continues, in news that may be of interest to people involved in hormone replacement therapy.
However, Ms Clegg suggests that people may not be as communicative in terms of discussing their sexual activities, something which could have implications in terms of sexual health.
"Whilst we are probably more sexually active and expect more we are also sexually reticent," she concludes.
Established in 1976, BASRT includes members with professional experience in a range of sectors including nursing, social work and medicine and is also a part member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy.
