The amount of protein a person needs to stay fit and healthy is dependent upon their weight, not their age, say researchers.

Many researchers believe that older adults need more protein than young adults, however results of a study by Wayne Campbell and colleagues suggest that this is not the case. They enrolled 42 people – 11 men and 12 women aged 21 to 46, and eight men and 11 women aged 63 to 81 – for their study on protein requirement.

Results showed that there was no difference in protein requirement between the younger and older subjects, thus suggesting that the current Recommended Dietary Allowance of protein of 0.80 grams per kilogram of body weight per day is sufficient for all adults.
