Sphaeranthus indicus may reduce levels of inflammatory biomarkers.

Utilized for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Sphaeranthus indicus is a botanical agent with anti-inflammatory effects have been associated. Rai Ajit K. Srivastava, from Piramal Life Sciences (India), and colleagues found that Sphaeranthus indicus and its active ingredient (7-hydroxy frullanoide) decreased specific inflammatory biomarkers – namely, MCP-1, TNF-alpha, and Interleukin-6.  The team also revealed that Sphaeranthus indicus inhibits the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), low levels of which corresponds to less inflammation,  by 54%. The study authors write that: “Our findings demonstrate that anti-inflammatory agents that lower pro-inflammatory proteins inhibit the progression of atherosclerosis.”

Rai Srivastava, Sapna Mistry, Somesh Sharma. “A novel anti-inflammatory natural product from Sphaeranthus indicus inhibits expression of VCAM1 and ICAM1, and slows atherosclerosis progression independent of lipid changes.”   Nutrition & Metabolism 2015, 12:20, 5 June 2015.
