Although the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis is often seen as a condition that affects women, men account for one in five cases. Recent study results have shown that the new osteoporosis treatment Forteo, which has already been proven effective in women, also helps men to increase their bone density.
Although the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis is often seen as a condition that affects women, men account for one in five cases. Recent study results have shown that the new osteoporosis treatment Forteo, which has already been proven effective in women, also helps men to increase their bone density. Forteo is made from parathyroid hormone, a naturally produced hormone that helps to preserve bone. Bone density, a measure of bone strength was seen to increase significantly in 90% of men given daily injections of the hormone. While results from another study found that men given Forteo were more than 80% less likely to fracture their spine than those given a placebo. Forteo is still in the clinical trial phase and has not yet been approved by the FDA.
