Increased circulating levels of magnesium may help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by up to 30%.

In that a deficit of magnesium increases the risk of cardiac arrhythmias, Liana C Del Gobbo, from the Harvard School of Public Health (Massachusetts, USA), and colleagues studied whether circulating levels of magnesium influence the risk of cardiovascular diseases.  The researchers reviewed completed a meta-analysis of 16 clinical studies involving a total of 313,041 subjects. The data revealed that for every 0.2 mmol/L increment in circulating magnesium, a 30% lower risk of cardiovascular disease resulted. Observing that: " Circulating and dietary magnesium are inversely associated with [cardiovascular disease] risk,” the study authors urge for “clinical trials to evaluate the potential role of magnesium in the prevention of with [cardiovascular disease]and [ischemic heart disease]”.
