New Mediterranean and Asian food pyramids are relatively new contenders vying for dieter allegiance, but they are gaining popularity among health-conscious Americans and health professionals. Like the 1992 U.S. Food Guide Pyramid, the foundation of Mediterranean and Asian diets is grain-based foods.
New Mediterranean and Asian food pyramids are relatively new contenders vying for dieter allegiance, but they are gaining popularity among health-conscious Americans and health professionals. Like the 1992 U.S. Food Guide Pyramid, the foundation of Mediterranean and Asian diets is grain-based foods. But these "traditional" pyramids are considered healthier because the Asian and Mediterranean diets emphasize plant-based protein and fat sources, rather than artery-clogging animal-based sources. Dr. Antonella Bianchi, an endocrinologist in Melbourne, Fla., said she was shocked by the American diet when she moved to this country.
