Most people like coffee, about 62% of Americans drink coffee on a daily basis, and as a whole around the globe over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed every day.

Studies on coffee show it to have both negative and positive effects on health, some believe it does more harm while some believe the opposite, despite possible negatives coffee is an integral staple in the global beverage market.

For many who drink coffee it helps to ignite receptors in the brain to get them moving and stay alert. Not only does it help them to jump start the day, but also to keep them going after a long day at work. Compared to soda or energy drinks and all the added chemicals and significantly higher sugar content they contain as compared to a basic cup of coffee, that’s bad news all around, especially to the waistline.

A study involving 228,465 subjects showed caffeine in the form of moderate amounts of coffee correlated with decreased instances of arrhythmias in those drinking three cups a day, according to the American College of Cardiology. That being said sizes were average cups, stores sell coffee mugs that can be as large as 3 cups, a Grande is more than twice the size of an official cup, and Venti is nearly three times the size of one cup.

The brain retains information better and you can sustain attention when you consume caffeine along with glucose according to a glucose and caffeine study. The cup in the morning may be helping with better production and a more organized method of going about the day.

Heavy coffee drinkers may have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes according to the American Chemical Society, this fitting in with the benefits of drinking coffee rather than energy drinks or soda. Coffee is suggested to prevent misfolding of amyloid polypeptides believed to be a factor in developing type 2 diabetes; chemical makeup of coffee blocks hIAPP lowering the risk of it causing the condition later in life.

Coffee is said to have a link to a lowered risk of cancer in women and Alzheimer’s disease in older adults. One cup per day may lower the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer; and another study showed women may reduce risk of colon cancer by drinking 3 cups a day.

As always most things are best and recommended in moderation, replacing all beverages with coffee will not stave off every illness, too much coffee will make you jittery and can cause sleeping problems as caffeine lingers and it is also addicting which can lead to mood swings.
