Several studies have shown that eating whole grain foods helps to lower the risk of heart disease, however, new research has found that they also significantly reduce the chances of having an ischemic stroke. Researchers analysed data from more than 75,000 women to see if they was any relationship between what they ate and their risk of stroke.

They found that women who ate the most servings of whole grains daily were only 57% as likely to have a stroke than those who ate the fewest servings, while women who ate a lot of whole grains and who never smoked reduced their stroke risk by half. Eating processed grain products offered no protection against stroke.
