Resveratrol Impacts Weight and Insulin Secretion in Metabolic Syndrome

In August 2014, researchers reported that resveratrol decreases weight and moderates insulin secretion in individuals with metabolic syndrome. The American Heart Association states that approximately 34% of adults in the U.S. have metabolic syndrome and are therefore at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, and stroke.

In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 24 subjects received 500 mg trans-resveratrol three times daily or placebo for 90 days. The researchers evaluated weight, body mass index (BMI), fat mass, and waist circumference at the beginning of the study and again after the intervention. The investigators also assessed glucose and insulin levels after a 75-gram dextrose load, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and calculated the area under the curve (AUC) values of glucose and insulin, total insulin secretion, first-phase of insulin secretion, and insulin sensitivity.

The researchers found that the subjects in the trans-resveratrol group had significant improvement in total weight, BMI, waist circumference, and fat mass compared to the beginning of the study. The investigators also showed that resveratrol supplementation resulted in significant differences in the area under the curve for insulin and the insulinogenic index.

The study authors concluded, “Administration of resveratrol significantly decreases weight, BMI, fat mass, waist circumference, area under the curve of insulin, and total insulin secretion.”
