Everyone knows listening to music during a workout helps make the workout more enjoyable, but did you know that music can help make your workout better?

According to an Oxford psychology professor Robin Dunbary, listening to music while exercising releases opioids, a chemical in the brain which can dull pain and make you less tired.

The brain releases chemical opioids when it hears music. These are natural painkillers which act like morphine.

Speaking at the conference of the Society for Music Perception & Cognition which concluded in Nashville on 5 August, Professor Robin Dunbar has said that actively engaging in music, like singing and dancing produces the best results.

Just listening does not really do the trick.

The researchers found that after six minutes of using the machine, the amount of effort a person thinks they are making decreases by half.

The more the interaction, the more opioids are produced. The researchers found that after six minutes of using the machine, the amount of effort a person thinks they are making decreases by half.

Make A Playlist for Best Results

Additional research by Dr Tom Fritz of the Max Planck Institute in Germany indicates that music tailored to the specific workout, through a specific playlist gives the best results. With today's smart phones and music applications like Spotify and Pandora,. making a customized playlist is a breeze.
