Long Sleep Duration Linked to Increased Risk of Metabolic Syndrome

Study implicates sleeping more than 8 hours a day with a 15% increased risk of metabolic syndrome, a precursor to cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

 

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of health risk factors that are associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  Factors include enlarged waist circumference, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides, low HDL (“good”) cholesterol, and high fasting glucose levels.  Teresa Arora, from the University of Birmingham School of Medicine (United Kingdom), and colleagues collected data on 29,310 residents of Guangzhou, China, ages 50 years and older, surveying for total sleep duration and assessing for markers of metabolic syndrome.  Those participants who reported a habitual daily sleep duration of eight hours or more (including naps) were 15% more likely to have metabolic syndrome.
