A research team from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) published a study in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, verifying that chemotherapy that kills cancer cells also triggers an inflammatory response that actually promotes aggressive tumor growth. Dipak Panigrahy, MD, the study’s lead author and an assistant professor at BIDMC’s Department of Pathology states that conventional chemo therapy is a double-edged sword in that the by-product of dead and dying cancer cells can stimulate tumor growth and negatively affect outcomes.

News Wise notes that this research justifies what much of the medical community has known for decades, however it’s the first study to determine the actual mechanisms responsible for it.

Media leaders like Mike Adams, editor of Natural News, and the Health Ranger have been sorely criticized by mainstream media for publishing articles insisting that chemotherapy actually causes cancer. Natural News has published several scientific studies that demonstrate the danger and inefficiency of standard cancer treatments.

A study published in the journal Nature in 2010 reported that many cancers arise from sites of infection, chronic irritation and inflammation and are critical components of tumor progression. A tumors’ micro-environment is often controlled by the inflammation process and therefore becomes a key component to the neoplastic process, proliferation, migration and survival of the cancer.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, also published a study in Science Translational Medicine that found chemotherapy creates a dramatic increase in circulating cancer cells. The researchers concluded that, “chemotherapy, despite decreasing tumor size, increases the risk of metastatic dissemination.”

The BIDMC study found good news: naturally produced Resolvins, in the body can stop the inflammatory process and slow or stop new tumors. In turning off inflammation and stimulating immune cells resolvins have the ability to digest tumor debris left by the cytokines of cancer development. In mouse studies, Resolvins decreased cancer growth in prostate, pancreatic, lung, and breast tumors, as well as melanoma and lymphoma, when combined with chemo therapy. Therefore their scientists strongly recommended resolvins be added to existing chemotherapy and radiation protocols.

A World Journal of Clinical Case study found that the active metabolites of Omega 3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω -3 PUFA), found in fish oil reduced inflammation naturally. So why not just use resolvins to get to reverse the inflammation that causes cancer in the first place?

However more research is needed for just that, to find out how it works as a preventative for inflammation and cancer.
