Reuters - Britain's leading scientific institutionsaid Monday it is urging countries to back a campaign to stop apossible ban on stem cell research as part of a global treatybanning human cloning. The London-based Royal Society isstepping up its drive to push the United Nations to ban thecloning of babies, but to make no ruling on using thetechnology for medical research, or therapeutic cloning, at its59th General Session in October.

The 191-nation U.N. GeneralAssembly is divided over whether to allow therapeutic cloningto continue or to adopt a broad cloning ban championed by theBush administration and Costa Rica with strong backing from theU.S. anti-abortion movement and many predominantly RomanCatholic nations.
