Dutch researchers find that reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), a complication seen in the healing process from fractures, injuries, and other forms of trauma, is associated with oxidative stress and thus can be prevented with Vitamin C supplementation. In a 50-day study of 115 patients, half of whom received one 500 mg capsule of vitamin C daily and the other half who received placebo, the placebo participants were three times as likely to develop RSD, including pain, swelling, decreased joint mobility, and large temperature swings in the affected part.
