There are two types of stroke: ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Ischemic stroke is due to an obstruction of a brain artery by a blood clot or an atheroma plaque. The obstruction drastically reduces the blood supply to brain tissues, causing a lack of oxygen, or “ischemia.” Hemorrhagic stroke results from a bleeding or “hemorrhage” out of a brain artery. Blood leaks out of the artery through a break in the wall. An excessive amount of blood arrives into an area of the brain, where it compresses the local neurons and other nerve cells. The blood stagnates there without having its oxygen renewed, explaining why the brain tissues affected by hemorrhages also suffer from a lack of oxygen.

Recent Rutgers research published in the journal Environmental Research Letters suggests that heat stress from extreme heat and humidity may affect more than 1.2 billion people annually by the year 2100, going off of current greenhouse gas emissions; this represents over four times the numbers affected today and over 12 times the number who would have been affected without industrial era global warming.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has expanded protocols currently in place within 6 counties in the state to include the entire state and has expanded upon them in a statewide order. This order is similar to the order Governor Sisolak announced for the state of Nevada on March. 17. 2020, but LA has announced its own stricter order.
