Cutting Calories And Eating At The Right Time Of Day Leads To Longer Life In Mice

One recipe for longevity is simple, if not easy to follow: eat less. Studies in a variety of animals have shown that restricting calories can lead to a longer, healthier life.

Now, new research suggests that the body's daily rhythms play a big part in this longevity effect. Eating only during their most active time of day substantially extended the lifespan of mice on a reduced-calorie diet, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Joseph Takahashi and colleagues report May 5, 2022, in the journal Science.

Compared To Other High-Income Countries America Has A Higher Heart Attack Mortality Rate

A study recently published in The BMJ reports finding significant differences in care for heart attack patients in six high-income countries, despite an international agreement on how heart attacks should be treated. However, Dr. Peter Cram, one of the study’s authors, as well as being a professor and chair of internal medicine at the University of Texas Medical Center at Galveston said that “No health care system seemed to be excelling in every aspect of heart attack care.”

Idioms and proverbs about the importance of maintaining good health span the ages. Many emphasize how closely health is tied to happiness and the opportunity to live a fulfilling and enjoyable life. A study published in Age and Ageing by The Japan Collaborate Cohort (JACC) Study group at Osaka University assessed the impact of modifying lifestyle behaviors on life expectancy from middle age onwards. The researchers found that adopting five or more healthy lifestyle behaviors increased life expectancy even for individuals >80 years of age and, importantly, including those with chronic conditions.
