Several recent studies have found that chocolate is high in antioxidants and scientists believe that the indulgent treat helps to combat cardiovascular disease by reducing cholesterol levels. The healthy chemicals in chocolate are flavinoids, a sub-group of polyphenols, widely believed to possess several health benefits. Flavinoids are found in plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, wine, and tea. Although chocolate contains healthy chemicals, it is not a good idea to eat a lot because of its high sugar and fat content. Scientists recommended that 200 calories of chocolate could be eaten daily while maintaining a healthy diet. Dieticians now refer to chocolate as a "functional food" meaning it provides health benefits beyond its nutritional value.
