Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder that gradually destroys an individual's memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, and communicate. Nearly 4.5 million Americans suffer from the disease. According to experts, that number has more than doubled since 1980. Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia.

There are many causes of dementia, including strokes, low vitamin B-12 levels, thyroid conditions, depression, AIDS, and other infections. There is no cure for this debilitating mental disease, but researchers continue to work on treatments that will improve the quality of living for patients.
