Dr. K. Masaki and colleagues tracked the dietary habits and health of 3,385 elderly Japanese American residents of Hawaii since the early 1980's. During the 1990's, the men (then ages 71-93) were evaluated for cognitive function (including memory) and dementia (senility). Men who regularly took vitamin E and C supplements were 88% less likely to develop vascular dementia, a type of mental decline related to blood vessel damage in the brain.
