NE - Stanford researcher speaks out against cloning bill LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - With state lawmakers preparing to debate a ban on human cloning, one of the nation's leading researchers said passing the bill would be a mistake. Dr. Irving Weissman, the head of the stem cell research program at Stanford University, spoke out Thursday against the proposal at a news conference in the Capitol Rotunda. Weissman said there should be a ban on reproductive cloning, but not on other research procedures the bill would not allow. Making that distinction would be impossible, said the bill's sponsor, Sen. Adrian Smith of Gering.
