When it comes to healthy eating, chocolate is not considered to be a nutritional component of a balanced diet, but scientists suggest that eating chocolate may help with certain medical conditions.

The positive health benefits of chocolate have been debated for years, however, recent reports indicate that new research is looking into the possibility that eating chocolate could reduce the risk of heart disease in women with diabetes.

Previous studies have shown that women who eat chocolate are less at risk of developing pre-eclampsia.

Rachel Cooke, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, commented: "There are really are no good or bad foods, but just good and bad overall diets.

"It is a shame that chocolate has been seen as bad food, because like most food, it can in most cases be included and enjoyed as part of healthy lifestyle."

Cocoa provides a rich source of flavonoids, a compound which has been found to benefit the heart.ADNFCR-1506-ID-18588489-ADNFCR
