Researchers at Bastyr University in Seattle wanted to find a way to provide better health monitoring and weight loss assessment for patients with type 2 diabetes. They say losing weight depends a lot on frequency of contact with a health care provider, so the more a person talks with a physician or dietician, the more successful he/she is likely to be. However, it is not as feasible for patients to have constant contact in a clinical setting.

Researchers acknowledge that using the Internet is an effective way to give people feedback without an "in-person" visit, but not all populations have access to the technology. Instead, researchers are studying the use of interactive cable television technology. Principal investigator Jennifer Lovejoy, Ph.D., says, "Pretty much everyone has a television, and it allows us to bring essentially the intervention team for weight loss into the person's home via the television, so they can get daily feedback on how they're doing and get their questions answered."
